The FCA is a small organization dedicated to the promotion of contemporary art within Ghana, West Africa and Africa as a whole. The organisation provides an information resource for artists, regularly holds workshops and exhibitions, and provides a space for artists, curators and academics to share ideas on the future for African art. The organisation is based in Accra, within offices very close to the city centre. It has very close links to the international diplomatic community with Ambassadors and High Commissioners on its board, the University of Accra and to international art associations.

Current Placement Opportunities

Event Organiser/Office Administrator
The role will be to provide administrative support, contribute to stakeholder relationship management, and provide creative input to the organisation of events.

Project Coordinator
Set up and implement new projects with other organisations. The FCA is currently undertaking the following projects:
• Aids Stigma campaign in collaboration with AED (a USAID funded project)
• World Food Programme Exhibition
• World Bank - Corruption Exhibition
The volunteer will be required to support the coordination of these projects and look to establish new projects with other organisations.

Fundraiser
The FCA is in need of new office space for their growing organisation. They are looking to lease a building in Accra which will serve both as an office, a meeting place for artists and a Contemporary Art Gallery (Ghana currently has no National Contemporary Art Museum). This requires significant funding. The intern will be required to look at the options for fundraising, meet with potential donors (such as UNESCO and private institutions), draft fundraising proposals

All roles requires a minimum of 5 hours a day (suggested 10-3pm), 5 days a week. You will work alongside the current part time secretary and other artists and volunteers, of which there will typically be at least 3-4 also at the office. You will be required to attend one weekly general meeting, usually on Wednesday afternoons from 4 pm till 6 pm.

Additionally, you will be required to frequent galleries and cultural organisations in Accra, to attend occasional evening events, and represent FCA with other volunteers of the foundation. This will be a wonderful way to learn about the city and meet people.

In order to maintain the sustainability and high performance of this project all volunteers are required to complete a detailed hand-over document for successive volunteers.

What kind of skills you need for this placement:
Volunteers must have a strong interest in art. You will need to be flexible and tolerant, show initiative and enthusiasm to face the many hurdles and challenges that you will encounter.

Where is the placement based?
The placement is based in the capital of Accra, dot in the centre of town. Accra is a lively, bustling city with a wide range of restaurants and “spots” (outside drinking bars) to enjoy.

Health and Safety
There are a number of health clinics and hospitals in the area. The local hospital in Osu is open 24/7. Volunteers should show due care and diligence whilst in placement. We recommend volunteers do not walk alone at night. Refrain from bringing expensive items as these attract attention.

Other details

• The volunteer will be housed in our accommodation in the centre of town, it is clean and well maintained. Previous volunteers described the flat as "a lovely haven in all the chaos." The accommodation is centrally located to Accra, with it possible to walk from the accommodation to nearby shops, communication centres, bars and restaurants.
• Wireless Internet is available at the accommodation
• The accommodation has 24/7 security
• Washing & ironing facility is available.
• Please arrive on a weekday to avoid being surcharged for weekend pick-ups.
• There are small stores in the neighbourhood and larger supermarkets can be found a 5-min drive away.
