What are the medical requirements for traveling in Ghana?

We advise you to contact your doctor or a travel clinic as soon as possible and get advice on traveling to Ghana, a tropical country.

We recommend that you have the following protection:

  • Yellow Fever Vaccine (Required for the Ghanaian Visa; good for ten years)
  • Malaria Pills (Required)
  • Typhoid (Required. Good for five years)
  • Tetanus, TB and Polio (as recommended by your doctor)
  • Immunoglobulin or Hepatitis A Vaccine (Strongly recommended. The vaccine requires re-immunization 6-12 months later, but is good for a much longer period)
  • Hepatitis B Vaccine (highly recommended)
  • Meningococcal Vaccine (Optional. Discuss with your doctor)

Please be aware that we are not trained medical professionals and as such you should ask your doctor or travel clinic which vaccinations to have.

We strongly recommend that you bring a well-stocked first aid kit.

What is the best way to get to Ghana?

We recommend you fly into Accra Kotoka Airport. There are a number of carriers who fly to Accra including British Airways, Delta, Alitalia, KLM, Kenya Airways and Ghana International Airlines. We recommend you start your search at cheapflights.com or opodo.com.

Please ensure you send us your arrival details so that when you arrive at the airport you will be met by an Ikando representative who will take you to your accommodation.

Upon arrival at Accra International Airport, please exit the building to the meeting area. An Ikando member of staff will be there to meet you, please keep an eye out for a sign with your name on it.

Will my current medical insurance be enough?

Probably not. You need to make sure that you are covered should you loose your luggage, your flight gets cancelled, you need emergency evacuation, your possessions are covered, should your trip be cancelled, etc. We recommend you buy your insurance as soon as you secure your placement.

Ikando's Aims

  • To help organisations in Ghana through the provision of quality, dedicated and hard-working volunteers.

To give volunteers and interns a positive perspective of Africa. In many ways Ghanaians are much richer than people in the West and we hope that our volunteers come to appreciate this.

I'm traveling on my own

Not to worry! 99% of our volunteers are solo travelers. Ikando is also a great way to meet friends and meet people that could become travel buddies for weekend excursions.

Fundraising Info

Fundraising is a great way to raise substantial funds to support your journey. In the past, Ikando volunteers have contacted their local community by writing letters to ask for support, or even organized community events - like concerts, art shows, game programmes such as bingo, and bake sales.

In-country support
Hilda Hilda is one of our housekeepers who lives at the Ikando Accommodation. She'll look after you whilst in-country, she also sometimes does airport pick-ups when Quarshi is off -duty.
